01 — Markengeschichte

Porada: Massivholzmeisterschaft in der Brianza seit 1948

Everything begins with wood. This is not a marketing phrase for Porada — it is a literal founding truth. In 1948, Luigi Allievi opened a small carpentry workshop in Cabiate, a town in the Brianza region of northern Italy between Milan and Lake Como. Allievi and his family made wooden chairs. They were meticulous about it. The chairs were not conceived as products but as objects that expressed everything the maker knew about wood: its grain, its warmth, its behavior under a plane, its capacity to acquire character over decades of use.

Two decades of refining that knowledge led, in 1968, to the formal founding of Porada — a name chosen to signal a broader ambition while preserving the integrity of the original craft. Where the earlier workshop had made chairs, Porada would furnish entire homes: tables, beds, bookcases, sideboards, sofas, mirrors and every complement in between. What would not change was the material at the center of everything: solid wood, worked by hand to a standard that no industrial process could replicate.

Today Porada is run by Tiziano Allievi, the third generation of the founding family. The atelier remains in Cabiate, where it has always been. Every piece in the collection is produced there, under a single roof, by craftspeople whose knowledge of wood is measured not in training programs but in years of practice. The brand's guiding philosophy has never changed: "Everything's born from the love of wood."

Over seventy-five years of production, Porada has built one of the most internationally recognized catalogs in Italian furniture — not through trend-chasing but through the opposite: an insistence on timeless forms executed in exceptional materials. The brand collaborates with some of Europe's most respected designers — Patrick Jouin, Staffan Tollgard, Emmanuel Gallina, Tarcisio Colzani, Carlo Ballabio, Gabriele & Oscar Buratti, Stefano Bigi, Giuseppe Viganò, Niccolò Devetag — each of whom understands and respects the company's commitment to wood as the primary expression of design.

Porada today exports to over 60 countries, furnishes luxury residential projects and prestigious hospitality environments worldwide, and maintains a flagship showroom in London alongside its Italian dealer network. It has received the Porada International Design Award — a competition organized in partnership with POLI.design (Politecnico di Milano) and ADI (Association for Industrial Design) — each year since 2013, identifying emerging designers whose work in solid wood might one day enter the collection.

02 — Materialien

Canaletto-Nussbaum und die Porada-Materialwelt

To understand Porada is to understand Canaletto Walnut. This is the material around which the entire brand is constructed — a North American walnut variety selected for its exceptional structural consistency, its warm chocolate and amber tones, and the depth and complexity of its natural grain. Porada sources its Canaletto Walnut exclusively from ecologically certified sustainable forests. The logs are transported to the Cabiate factory, placed under the factory roof and allowed to dry naturally over the course of a full year — a process that prevents the warping and movement that affects wood dried too quickly.

When a log has dried, it is cut into slabs. Any slab that does not meet Porada's quality standard is fed directly into the factory's furnace, where — combined with solar panels on the roof — it provides the entire energy supply for the factory. Porada is completely self-powered. Wood waste and renewable energy run the atelier from first cut to final polish.

The resulting slabs are joined, clamped, glued, hand-sanded, varnished and re-sanded through a process that combines CNC precision with hand-finishing at every stage where a machine cannot match the sensitivity of a craftsperson's judgment.

Beyond Canaletto Walnut, Porada also works in ash and oak, including the Spessart Oak sourced from the Spessart Forest in Bavaria. The brand acquired 220 hectares of forest in Burgundy, France in 2011, which it repopulates with ash grafts after harvesting. The Porada Forest initiative, in partnership with Treedom, plants trees in global reforestation projects, further offsetting the brand's environmental impact.

Other materials in the Porada world: white Carrara marble, grey Carnico marble, various European stone varieties; brushed brass and lacquered metal hardware; clear and smoked tempered glass; Rock (a resistant and versatile ceramic material used for table tops); and a curated range of fabrics and leathers for upholstered elements. These secondary materials are never chosen for contrast alone — they are selected to enhance and complement the warmth and clarity of the wood.

CANALETTO WALNUT

The hero material. Rich chocolate and amber tones, complex natural grain, exceptional structural consistency. Sourced from ecologically certified North American forests. Available in multiple finishes: natural, smoked, brushed and lacquered variants.

ASH AND OAK

Lighter alternatives to walnut. Ash offers a more neutral, contemporary tone; Spessart Oak from Bavaria provides warmth with a more open grain. Both available across multiple product families.

MARBLE

White Carrara, grey Carnico and other European stone varieties feature in tabletops, coffee table bases and decorative elements. Always combined with wood to maintain the brand's material identity.

BRASS AND METAL

Brushed brass details appear across legs, hinges, handles and structural elements — adding precision and warmth without competing with the wood.

FABRICS AND LEATHERS

The Softbay collection — sofas, armchairs, bed — is upholstered in a curated selection of fabrics and leathers. Porada's signature fabric is Bouclage, a precious blend of cotton, linen and wool.

03 — Designer

Die kreativen Köpfe hinter Porada

PATRICK JOUIN

One of Porada's most celebrated collaborators. French designer Patrick Jouin's Ella armchair — described by press as a reference piece in contemporary solid wood furniture, with a frame inspired by American and Japanese woodworking traditions — is among the most widely cited Porada pieces in design media.

TARCISIO COLZANI

The most prolific collaborator in Porada's history in terms of pieces in production. Colzani's work for the brand spans bookcases, mirrors, consoles and storage — always characterized by a pure, direct approach to wood construction. His Biblo bookcase and Plissé mirror are particular highlights.

CARLO BALLABIO

One of the most commercially important designers in the Porada catalog, with over 50 pieces in production. Ballabio's work includes the Ziggy family — one of the brand's most extensive collections, spanning dining tables, beds, coffee tables and consoles — as well as the Atlante bar cabinet, one of the most distinctive pieces in the entire Italian furniture market.

STEFANO BIGI

Creator of the Infinity table, Porada's single most recognized piece and confirmed bestseller since its launch in 2009. The undulating sculptural base — inspired by the mathematical infinity symbol — is one of the most immediately recognizable forms in Italian design.

GABRIELE & OSCAR BURATTI

The Buratti duo have produced the Atlante collection (sideboards, bar cabinet and extensive storage system) and the Vera sofa — among the most requested pieces in the brand's residential and hospitality projects. Their Calin armchair is a reference in the category. GIUSEPPE VIGANÒ Creator of the Softbay collection — sofas, armchairs and bed — one of Porada's bestselling product families. Viganò's approach brings an unusual softness to the brand's wood-first vocabulary: the paper-clip shaped solid walnut feet of the Softbay pieces are among the most distinctive design details in contemporary Italian furniture. Also designs for Arketipo Firenze.

STAFFAN TOLLGARD & FILIPPO CASTELLANI

Swedish-Italian design duo behind the Ekero collection — a family of coffee tables with solid Canaletto walnut tops on Carrara or Carnico marble bases, named after Oak Island near Stockholm where Tollgard grew up. The concept of wood enclosed by marble — like an island surrounded by sea — produces some of Porada's most photographed pieces. NICCOLÒ DEVETAG Creator of the Ginkgo armchair and Frida dining chair — both described by dealers as anchoring pieces for the living and dining room.

EMMANUEL GALLINA

Produces refined pieces that extend Porada's vocabulary into more graphic, architectural territory.

DAVID DOLCINI

Creates pieces that balance the warmth of walnut with precise architectural proportions.

05 — Individualisierung

Was Sie bei einer Porada-Bestellung spezifizieren können

Porada's customization approach is extensive, reflecting the brand's conviction that furniture should adapt to people and their spaces rather than imposing a fixed aesthetic.

WOOD FINISHES

Canaletto Walnut is available in multiple finishes: natural (preserving the full warmth of the unmodified grain), smoked (deepening the tone toward dark chocolate), brushed (emphasizing the grain texture) and lacquered (in a range of colors). Ash and oak are available in equivalent finish families. The choice of finish profoundly affects the character of a piece: a Ziggy table in natural walnut reads as warm and organic; the same table in smoked walnut reads as architectural and contemporary.

TABLE TOP OPTIONS

Porada table tops can be specified in solid wood, clear or smoked tempered glass, Rock ceramic material (resistant and versatile, available in stone-effect colorways) or natural stone/marble (on selected models). The combination of materials — solid walnut base with glass top, for instance — allows clients to calibrate the visual weight of a piece to suit the room.

UPHOLSTERY (SOFTBAY, VERA, KLEM AND SEATING) A curated selection of fabrics and leathers is available across all upholstered pieces. The Bouclage fabric — cotton, linen and wool blend — is Porada's signature textile. Leather options span natural, semi-aniline and pigmented grades. The Softbay collection features a removable upholstery option (headboard and frame) on the bed.

METAL FINISHES

Brushed brass, lacquered black, titanium and natural metal finishes are available across legs, feet, handles and structural connectors. The choice of metal finish affects the character of a piece significantly: brass reads as warm and refined; black metal reads as graphic and contemporary.

DIMENSIONS

Dimensional customization is available on selected dining tables and bed frames. Marchese 1930's team can prepare scaled floor plans using your room measurements.

SAMPLE SERVICE

Physical material samples — wood finish chips, fabric swatches and leather samples — are sent by post to international clients. For significant projects, digital renderings showing the selected configuration in your space are available.
