Hemp is a humble fibre, dry and almost coarse. With Aran, Baxter's in-house studio Baxter P. took it seriously. The rug is hand-knotted in Nepal, and viscose runs alongside the hemp, adding sheen and softness where the hemp stays matt.
The pile is not even. It has four different heights, cut and finished by hand, so the surface is sculpted: muted, textured areas next to areas that catch the light. The outline is irregular too, so Aran does not draw a rectangle under the sofa but a free shape, almost an island.
It measures 380 × 280 cm, enough to hold a whole seating area. Because it is made by hand, the size can vary by plus or minus 5%, the mark of a piece made one at a time.
